Workplace Spirituality and Organizational Resilience of Shipping Companies in Rivers State

Abstract :

Success in the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous business environment as we have it now; can only be attained by flexible, adaptive and agile firms (i.e. resilient firms). Consequently, our inquiry sought to examine the relationship between workplace spirituality and organizational resilience of shipping companies in Rivers State. The Krejcie and Morgan’s table of determining sample size served as the basis for obtaining a sample of two-hundred and one (201) foremen and dock workers in eight (8) shipping companies from and an accessible population of four-hundred and twenty (420). Given the study variables, five (5) null hypotheses were tested via the Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient analytical tool at 0.05 significance level. The rejection of the entire null hypotheses for the study, after an analysis of one-hundred and seventy (170) duplicates of the questionnaire (from the 200 administered) led to an acceptance of their alternates; implying a meaningful influence of workplace spirituality on organizational resilience of shipping companies in Rivers State. Conclusively, the study advocates for the creation of an enabling environment for adopting workplace spirituality, through firm’s organizational culture, so as to induce robustness and adaptability, for overall resilience. The enquiry recommends that shipping companies in Rivers State should encourage adherence to meaningful work; policies that boosts employees’ work-life enrichment; alignment to common tenets to boost organizational wisdom, courage, and excellence and the belief of interconnectedness to aid higher spirituality at work. .
